Breast Reduction

What is breast reduction surgery?

A breast reduction or Reduction Mammoplasty as it is sometimes called, reduces a woman’s breasts in both size and weight.

Why choose breast reduction surgery?

Large breasts can be uncomfortable, causing back or shoulder pain and make clothing choice very difficult. Some women also find that very large breasts are embarrassing causing low self confidence and self esteem. After breast reduction surgery, women can expect smaller, firmer breasts that are in proportion with their body. Many of our clients have commented on how much better they feel both physically and mentally following breast reduction surgery.

Breast reduction surgery – what the procedure involves

A mammoplasty procedure is performed under general anaesthetic by a specialist plastic Surgeon and takes approximately 3-4 hours. During the operation, the excess skin, breast tissue and fat is removed and the breast remolded into the new shape. The areola is carefully re-positioned and possibly reshaped to suit the new breast. To create the desired shape, the Surgeon’s incision are normally in an anchor shape; going along the crease of the breast (where it meets the chest wall), up towards and around the areola.

How many techniques are there for breast reduction?

There are several techniques currently used in breast reduction surgery. A technique suitable for a particular individual is discussed with her and explained. This includes Breast Liposuction(only for small volume reduction)pedicled breast reduction techniques and free nipple areola graft.

Is breast reduction permanent?

Yes, breast reduction surgery should be considered permanent, although the remaining fat cells will swell and enlarge if you gain weight. Likewise, in the event of a pregnancy, the tissues swell or take on fluid and store milk. Natural or synthetic hormones may also cause breast tissue to swell and be tender to the touch. If you take hormonal supplements, it is quite possible to gain small amounts of breast tissue back.

The exception is in virginal hyperplasia/hypertrophy, where the estrogen levels are high and the development of the breast may be ongoing.

Where are the incisions made, and are there any visible breast reduction scars?

Incisions are usually made within the natural folds under the breasts, sometimes around the areolae, and in a line from the crease to the areolae. Some procedures require only a keyhole incision .The surgery is not a minor one and breast reduction scars should be expected. Unnecessary scarring is generally avoided, although in nonliposuction techniques the scarring is more pronounced.

What can I expect after the surgery?

Following the procedure, we ask you to stay in hospital overnight for observation and to recover from the anaesthetic. We recommend clients to wear a compression garment for a week after surgery and to rest for two weeks. You can then gradually resume physical exercise activities and expect to be fully back to normal after six weeks. Swelling and some degree of discomfort is to be expected, however this is normally easily managed with simple analgesia. As with all our surgical procedures, you will be closely monitored by our aftercare team throughout your recovery period.

Breast Augmentation

Why choose breast enlargement surgery?

Many women are unhappy with their breasts, believing them to be too small, unequal in shape or size or having lost volume following breast feeding. After our breast implant procedure, many of our clients have commented on their increased confidence and femininity as well as their clothes looking and fitting better and an overall positive improvement in their well-being.

What can I expect in the initial consultation?

Here at RM Aesthetics, we understand that every woman is different, so we offer a range of surgery options and implants to suit your needs. Some women may wish to only go up one or two cup sizes and achieve a very natural look, whereas others may wish for a more dramatic enhancement. During your consultation with your Specialist Cosmetic Surgeon, we will fully discuss your aims and suggest the most suitable size and type of breast implant to suit your needs and body type. We have a full portfolio of breast enlargement before and after pictures for you to peruse at your consultation. Your Cosmetic Surgeon will fully discuss all your options with you so that you are fully equipped to make an informed decision about your surgery.

How is the procedure done???

Breast augmentation is done under general anaesthesia. A small inflammatory incision is usually used for creating pocket either directly on the breast tissue or under the pectoral muscle. Sillicone breast implant of suitable size is introduced in the pocket and incision is closed in layers. Incision lines fade over a period of time.

How long does the breast implant procedure take???

Although every case is different, on average, the surgery lasts one to two hours.

When can I resume my normal life???

Most patients are able to return to work within a few days. It’s best to avoid any strenuous activities that could raise your pulse and blood pressure for a couple of weeks.

What can I expect after the surgery?

After your surgery, we aim for you to be home the morning after your surgery. Following your surgery, you should expect some discomfort and bruising. Pain can normally be managed with simple analgesia. In the weeks following your surgery, we recommend that you wear a support bra to minimize discomfort and aid healing. Any stitches will be removed after 10-14 days and you can return to work about a week after your procedure. Clients are normally advised to avoid strenuous exercise for 6 weeks after surgery. As with all surgery, there will be some scarring along the incision line, though this will fade over time.
